Alright, so now media's favorite topic (In Norwegian news-papers atleast) is the Piratebay-trial going on over in Sweden. Media tends to pick up on cases which involves "new" trends or actualities within the technological world, they just make sure to look at things from such an unprofessional view that "everyone" can read about it and know enough to chit-chat and have an opinion about it the day after, around the lunchtable at work.
First of all, articles about the keeps getting mixed up with debates on "should music, games and movies be free or not?"
This is a pointless debate.
Ofcourse it shouldn't be, and legally it isn't. However, unless internet get severely changed and moderated, it will forever be IMPOSSIBLE to make it physically impossible for people to download stuff for free. Personally, I think it's about ethics and morals within every single human beeing. I myself did not have much knowledge or interest in music until I heard about and downloaded "Napster" and started building my own personal archive of music, using my old 28.8 modem.
However, artists, CDs and games that I really enjoyed, respected and appreciated I made sure to purchase aswell. Now I have a decent CD-collection, game-collection and DVD-collection, and I can honestly say that I don't know if I've ever had this interest for these mediums unless it had been so easily accessible through the internet.
This is where I stand on the moral bit, on whether music should be accessible for free or not; It should not, but it WILL be. Record-companies should become better at making people get on their side, instead of redicilous trials such as the one against the people behind piratebay.
As for the piratebay-trial I think the idea of holding these men responsible for record-companies "lost" money is completely horrendous. It's the same as imprisoning weapon-manufacturers everytime a weapon they manufactures was used to kill a human-beeing. Are they aware of the fact that the weapons they invent and create will be used to kill people..? Yes, ofcourse they are. However, it's the person that holds the gun and fires the gun that is to be held responsible for killing another man.
Same thing with piratebay. Were they aware of the fact that this site would be used for spreading files (also illegally) through the internet? Yes, ofcourse they were. The fact of the matter though is; they were just the inventors of this service. It's whoever commits the actual crime of downloading the material that is to be held responsible.
Responsibility.. when will the greedy record-companies start taking responsibility? Instead of trying to SCARE people away from accessing music the easiest way possible, they should try to get on the people's side and look at how they can make their services more attractive and accessible for people.
Personally I look at a good album as a modern treasure; the cover, the art/presentation inside the cover and the CD itself.
Download and preview things from piratebay (or any other torrent-tracker site) and then make sure you have a clear consciense and support the artists you fall inlove with through buying their material!
